Beacheads and Tidelines Across Long Beach Area
A local resident praises Long Beach beaches for open access and public use with lifeguards, fishing piers, and boat launches, contrasting with Wilmette and nearby towns that charge for beach use. The piece argues for public tidelands funds to support beaches and parks, citing Huntington Beach as a model and noting support for equal access and nonrestricted enjoyment. It also recounts a reader story about the Brown family dog and praise for the Hodges who helped verify details, plus a whimsical note about a mysterious holy city building project and a space gun deployed on a broomstick horse scenario.

In a 299 to 237 vote, Lakewood residents approve annexation of a 125 acre South Lakewood section with 2,350 residents to Long Beach. The area, bordered by Bellflower Boulevard and other streets, reflects a regional trend as five similar South Lakewood areas have already chosen to annex this year. Annexation results vary by polling place with supporting and opposing tallies, and officials note the Lakewood sales tax measure would not take effect before mid to late fall. Local officials from Lakewood and Long Beach attended, including mayors, council members, and city administrators, as talks continue.
