Vegas Trains Delayed by Flash Floods

Desert cloudbursts flooded the California Nevada border area halting Union Pacific routes to Las Vegas. Eastbound City of Los Angeles and Challenger were delayed up to 12 hours, with some passengers bused from Barstow to Las Vegas. Flooding also disrupted U S 91 and debris covered tracks near Cima Valley Wells. A separate Chicago report described an ex convict shooting a rookie officer in a movie theater as police hunted the gunman.

Cabin Cruiser Burns and Sinks Off California coast

Four people were rescued when the 30-foot cabin cruiser Bambino burned and sank about 15 miles southeast of Long Beach. Aboard were Charles E. Gibson Jr, his father, and Gerald and his wife, Hermosa Beach residents. The boat, worth about 5500, departed San Pedro at 2 am for Catalina fishing.

Swallowed Pennies Fatal to Girl Seven Years Old

Judith K. Hamilton, age 7, died Wednesday in Massachusetts after swallowing pennies two weeks earlier. Medical Examiner T. Morton Gallagher ruled inflammation of the stomach and throat caused by the coins’ copper contributed to death. The child had not told adults she swallowed the pennies until X rays revealed the coins.

Dogs Kill Boy 6 as Pack mauls him near Bracebridge

Bracebridge Ontario report states a six year old boy was killed by a pack of 14 farm dogs while trying to shield his own pet. Wayne Baker wandered from a summer home at Matthiasville and was found an hour later in bushes on a neighboring farm. The owner Vera MacDonald had left briefly and returned to find the dogs acting strangely before discovering the child. He died at hospital despite efforts to save him.

Korean Reds Shoot Down Yank Plane

In PANMUNJOM Korea Communist anti-aircraft guns shot down a small unarmed American training plane after it allegedly intruded briefly into the demilitarized zone. Maj. Gen. Harlan Parks condemned the attack as wanton murder and said the two crew members, a pilot and a military passenger, were missing with their names withheld. An Air Force search for the missing C47 transport began after tracers were seen and ground observers reported the loss near Seoul.

A five story house collapsed in Cairo's Musky district killing 13 people including 10 women and 3 men. Police said firefighters rescued 23. Fire officials coordinated rescue operations as debris were cleared.

Family of 3 Killed in Landslide Tragedy

A family of three, David Cutter 46, Elsie 46, and daughter Patricia 3, were buried Wednesday night when a sand and clay embankment collapsed along the Winooski River during heavy rains. They had been watching sections of the riverbank wash away before the landslide.

Jilted Suitor of Victim's Daughter Held

A 54 year old woman was shot on the front steps of her apartment at lat 5881 Orange Ave by her daughter's rejected suitor Bert Ransbury 63 of 1107 E 17th St Compton. He was captured about an hour later and booked on suspicion of murder. The victim, Elsie E Gillespie a cook, was identified by her daughters Gertrude Dean 36 and Shirley Jamar 33 amid an emotional scene as the suspect was returned to the scene. Dean said she had broken up with Ransbury Wednesday and witnessed him push her mother. The weapon was a .22 caliber rifle. Police indicated the victim opposed the suspect's attentions to her daughter. The report notes she left for work about 7:30 am. Continued on Page A-5.

An eight non general court martial began deliberations at 2 13 p m today in the case of Sgt James C Gallagher 23 charged with collaborating with the enemy and the unpremeditated murder of three fellow American prisoners in Korea. The court retired after a half hour charge by Cal Laurence W Lougee. Prosecution contends Gallagher courted favor with Chinese Reds and threw ailing POWs from a prison hut and left them to die in freezing cold.
