Board Okays Reduction for One Owner

Nine property owners faced the County Board of Equalization on Wednesday with only one receiving a reduction in market value for property assessments. The case involved Gerhard Rohringer of Montecito at 745 Winding, while other districts saw denials or stipulations in 1969 flood related values. Plans for a new disposal area north of Los Olivos drew complaints to Planning Commission chair Richard Clare, who stressed the commission was not involved in disposal site approval.

Planners consider hearing on county recreational policy

A Bixby Ranch representative urged the County Planning Commission to hold a general plan hearing on recreational projects. The Agricultural Preserve Advisory Committee recommends a November 30 deadline for receiving agricultural preserve applications for the 1971 tax lien year, to ensure full processing before the lien date. A zoning hearing on recreational area regulations was postponed and may be rescheduled.

Obituary for Ruth Ainsworth in Lompoc

Funeral services are set for Ruth P. Ainsworth at 9 a.m. Friday at McPeek Family Chapel in Lompoc. The 59 year old resident, who died Tuesday night at Lompoc District Hospital, is survived by two sons, a sister, and grandchildren. interment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. The service will be led by Rev. Robert D. Montgomery of First United Methodist Church.

Vending machines eyed for city pool area revenue

Parks and Recreation Commission proposed a 90 day trial of installing food and drink vending machines at the Municipal Pool to boost city revenue. Commissioner Gene Forbes urged a feasibility report from Recreation Superintendent Jack Anderson and City Administrator Gene Wahlers before bids or agreements. Forbes claimed potential net gains around 500 dollars during peak pool months with a 10 cent share from sales. The report also noted a noise issue from about 500 motorbikes in the city and discussed a proposal by Harry Ernest of the Slo Poke Motorcycle Club to lease land along the Santa Ynez River bed for riding with potential city insurance to cover community liability and safety seminars. The commission urged contacting City Attorney James Longtin to explore insurance options.

Witnesses dispute warnings before tear gas killed newsman

Coroner's inquest heard witnesses say sheriff's deputies fired tear gas projectiles into the Silver Dollar Bar during rioting in East Los Angeles without warning. One shot hit Ruben Salazar and another deputy allegedly fired into the bar as a deputy positioned a rifle from a car across the street.

Two Plead Guilty in Lompoc Housing Shooting

In Santa Barbara Superior Court Ronald Leon Simmons 26 pleaded guilty to second degree murder for the shooting death of Lompoc man Edwin Demetrio Bolchini 27 who died after an altercation at a Santa Barbara apartment A second defendant Bolchini pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a third suspect Jose Aguilar Quinonez 28 faces sentencing at a hearing scheduled for Oct 13.
