Jordan and Palestinians End Civil War After Tank Battle

King Hussein with Sudanese mediator Gaafar El Numeiry announced a joint ceasefire plan ending seven days of civil war after a decisive tank clash drove Syrian forces back into Syria. The accord follows seven days of heavy fighting that reportedly killed up to 15,000 people.

District files countersuit in building controversy

The Santa Maria area school district seeks $124 319 in a counter claim against M L Strate Construction Co for delays in the central administration building project. A cross complaint targets Strate along with Aetna Casualty and Surety Co and others over insurance coverage. The suits were filed Sept 16 in Santa Maria Superior Court.

Lompoc Chamber Adopts Regular Monthly Meetings

The Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce sets regular monthly general membership meetings starting tomorrow at noon at the Valley Club. President John Martin says the sessions will update members on activities and invite floor comment and suggestions. Cost of living rise slows to lowest since 1968

The UPI report from Washington notes the August consumer price index rose 0.2 percent, the smallest since September 1967, signaling inflation containment. Food costs edged up 0.1 percent while clothing and services climbed, with notable price shifts in eggs potatoes tomatoes lettuce and coffee.

Albany Labor Department Shooting Leaves Four Women Dead

Cambodian Troops Reach Toward Tang Kauk Under Heavy Resistance

Cambodian forces pushed toward Tang Kauk within a few hundred yards as North Vietnamese troops held the town. The Cambodian High Command said more than 60,000 pro communist combatants have been killed in six months since Sihanouk’s ouster. A battalion reinforced Tang Kauk drive. paratroopers reached three miles northeast, deepest penetration to date.
