Relief and ceasefire efforts amid Middle East hostage crisis

Red Cross mobilizes massive relief as 15 hijack hostages are recovered and thousands of civilians and prisoners of war in Jordan receive aid. Reds Down Seven Copters Near DMZ

UPI report says at least seven helicopters from U S and South Vietnam were shot down near The Rockpile six miles south of the DMZ amid ground fire. Six U S aircraft belonged to the 10th Airborne and one Huey from the Vietnamese air force. One Vietnamese soldier was killed and three wounded. initial word put American casualties at three wounded.

U.S. suspects Russia building Cuba submarine base

The Pentagon says it has evidence of activity at Cien Fuegos suggesting a base for nuclear submarines, with four Soviet ships and heavy barges in the harbor. Officials cannot confirm the purpose, but do not rule out missile-carrying submarines.

Lompoc teachers accept district salary package in dispute

Don Lisle president of the Lompoc Education Association plans to deliver a letter to Superintendent Glen Wegner accepting a salary package approved Aug 25. The riders attached to the package are returned by LEA and not legally binding. The council rescinded the prior rejection and seeks talks on adding elementary level programs and teachers.

Heat wave grips the East as power demand pressures ease

Sweltering weather covered much of the East from upstate New York to the Carolinas and western Pennsylvania, closing a fraught week for power suppliers with record temperatures. No deliberate outages were reported though voltage reductions around 5 percent were common. By noon the crisis eased with no cutbacks announced and New Jersey officials hopeful further reductions would not be needed.
