Governors pledge to curb construction to fight inflation

A bipartisan group of 13 governors meeting with President Nixon pledged to reduce highway and other public works construction as part of inflation fighting efforts. Vice President Agnew said no binding targets were set and each state would do its best while Nixon announced a new labor management government committee to curb wage and price hikes in construction.

McCracken warns of tougher price environment in Detroit speech

Paul W. McCracken, chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, said the economy is moving toward a period less friendly to price increases with sticky markets and disappointing sales. The Labor Department reported a 0.4 percent rise in the cost of living in August, led by higher homeowner costs, food, and medical care.

Lompoc Hospital Directors Face Rest Home Endorsement Decision

The Lompoc Hospital District directors will consider endorsing a Fresno developer’s plan for a 90 bed convalescent hospital on Walnut Avenue between Third and Fourth streets. The $600000 project requires approval from two California hospital and rest home associations and would occupy the southern half of the block. The district now operates a 29 bed long term care wing, and board policy seeks to avoid competing with private enterprises. a decision may steer toward or away from expanding rest home services.

Lompoc Johns-Manville Quarter Century Club to Induct 1969 Members

The Lompoc Chapter will hold its 30th club induction at the Lompoc Elks Club. Inductees are Alfred Lara and B R Hennessy. R C Jacobs will MC, H M Ball will act as induction officer. Lara started with Johns Manville in 1941 and has held multiple quarry, mining, and equipment roles. He and his wife Rose have two children and five grandchildren. Hennessy joined JM in 1934 and has worked across the mail room, garage, plant offices, store room, and design office, with clerical duties to brick and silicate plants. He lives with his son Raymond. his brother John is also a member.

Nevins to address Santa Barbara Taxpayers Association

Richard Nevins of the State Board of Equalization will speak at the Santa Barbara County Taxpayers Association semi annual meeting in Santa Maria Club. The talk covers tax reform and who to tax for desired outcomes. social hour at 6 30 p m precedes a 4 50 dollar ticketed banquet with tickets sold in Lompoc. Nevins, a Yale graduate from Pasadena, was elected to the board in 1958 and reelected in 1962 and 1966, representing more than 11 million Southern California residents. The event is open to the public.

Wreckage Braced as Mexicana Jet Search Continues

In Mexico City rescue teams used cutting torches a dredge and a crane to pry apart the wreckage of a Mexicana Airlines 727 that plunged into a swamp near the airport. Twenty six were confirmed dead including eleven Americans with about 80 injured and up to 15 still missing.

Israeli warplanes attacked Egyptian military targets west of the Suez Canal in retaliation for fighting along the waterway that wounded five Israeli soldiers. Look Magazine lawyers begin three week depositions in the defense against Mayor Alioto’s 12.5 million libel suit. They will interview 10 people tied to a Sept 23 Look article linking Alioto to Mafia figures, including Frank Bompensiero and Frank La Porte with dates in San Francisco and Pacific Beach California.
