Trustees to Vote on Bond Interest Rate Increase
The school board plans an election on December 2 to raise the statutory interest rate on school bonds from 5 percent to 7 percent. Voters approved the bonds in 1961 and state funding followed, but further voter approval is required to raise the rate.
25 Killed As Mexican Airlines Jet Crashes Near Mexico City
A Boeing 727 carrying 118 aboard including 60 Club Internationale travel club members from Chicago and Detroit crashed into Texcoco lakebed near Mexico City. At least 25 dead, about 80 injured, several missing. Rescue workers struggled in mud as officials investigated causes and casualty figures. Bob Pitt, president of Club Internationale, traveled to Mexico City to assist.

Nixon creates special commission to ease construction industry tensions
President Nixon issued an executive order to form the Construction Industry Collective Bargaining Commission. Led by Labor Secretary George P Schultz, the panel includes unions and industry officials to mediate disputes and enforce a 30 day cooling off period. The plan envisions voluntary tripartite procedures with four public members and equal labor and management reps, not compulsory arbitration.

Marines pull out as Bb2s drop bombs near DMZ
U S B52s unloaded 100 tons of bombs on targets just below the DMZ after Marines abandoned bases Russell Cates and Fuller. Leathernecks moved to Quang Tri and Dong Ha to head home or to Okinawa before Dec 15. Marine HQ in Da Nang said 72,000 Marines in Vietnam will serve 12 months instead of 13, enabling earlier homeward moves.

Valley Weekend Crashes Leave Four Injured
Four people were injured in four weekend traffic incidents reported by officials. John Baney, 51, is in the Vandenberg Base Hospital ICU after his van overturned on Lompoc Casmalia Road with internal injuries. Norbert Jacobs, 38, sustained minor injuries from a fall off his motorcycle and was treated at the base hospital. James Littlefield, 10, suffered a scalp cut after a bicycle collision with a car on West North Avenue. Suzy Ploutz, 46, had minor injuries after losing control on Vandenberg Road and Diana Bridge, 20, escaped injury when she hit a telephone pole on La Salle Canyon Road.

A tropical low dumped over 16 inches of rain on the Florida Panhandle causing road and home basement floods and about 1 million dollars in crop and road damage. Public schools closed in Leon and Gadsden Counties as the storm named Inga moves slowly northward. Gulf County reported 16.22 inches of rain.

Former Mexican president Adolfo Lopez Mateos dies in Mexico City
Adolfo Lopez Mateos, who led Mexico from 1958 to 1964, died at his home in Mexico City at age 59 after a long coma since a May 1967 stroke. The former president had been hospitalized earlier in the year.
