Doctors seek role in hospital services debate

County doctors ask to participate in discussions before Board of Supervisors acts on possible consolidation of county hospital services. A 9:30 a.m. study session is set for Sept 25 in the County Administration Building to review reports and consider closing one hospital and phasing out internships at Santa Barbara General Hospital by June 30.

County to draft nudist bathing crackdown ordinance

County to study age water need for agriculture funding

County supervisors plan a full data review by Oct 1 to decide on funding a comprehensive study of agriculture water needs. Agricultural Commissioner Graydon Hall Jr. and Public Works Director Norman Caldwell recommended a report under Hall with input from the County Water Agency and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

County Workers Seek Unemployment Insurance Reconsideration

County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson promised the board a new look at unemployment insurance for county workers amid warnings of possible layoffs from hospital service consolidation and welfare trends. Johnson will meet with employee groups and report back by October 22 after the board authorized minimum and maximum self insured program options. Zack L. Stringer and Leonard Roders warned layoffs could occur as duties shift from the county laundry operation and other reorganizations affect staff.

Board stalls zoning symbols vote halts new estate designations

The County Board of Supervisors defeated a Planning Commission plan by a 3-2 vote to establish three new general plan and zoning symbols for 10 acre 40 acre and 100 acre residential estates. They sent the matter back to the commission to consider a 20-acre estate option amid ties over rural hillside compatibility.

PUC Approves Vandenberg Utilities Merger Into Park Water

The California PUC authorizes merging Vandenberg Utilities and Vandenberg Disposal into Park Water Company serving parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Park Water may issue a 1.3 million dollar note for greens and filtration plant work and will exchange up to 436 shares of its common stock for the two Vandenberg utilities.

Evening classes open at Allan Hancock College in Lompoc

Lompoc Valley residents can choose from about 40 subjects at Cabrillo High School facilities with courses in administration of justice anthropology of basic art and foreign languages. Registration runs weekdays until Sept 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. in B-2 faculty lounge. all courses are credit and free.

County Board opposes Santa Maria redistricting plan

The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to back Santa Maria against a proposed state senatorial district map that would split the city. Third District Supervisor James M. Slater opposed the resolution, saying the county should not engage in redistricting politics. The resolution will be sent to county legislative representatives.

Allan Hancock College offers Nursing Assistant class this fall

The Continuing Education Division will start the Nursing Assistant course on Sept. 25 with classes in Lompoc and Santa Maria. Registration for Santa Maria is Sept. 24 at 8 30 a.m. on campus and for Lompoc Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at Cabrillo High School Social Science Room 6. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 to 9 30 p.m. with two five hour lab days weekly. It is a noncredit course to prepare for home health aide and nurse attendant roles. a $2 insurance fee, uniform and textbook are required.
