No Change Planned in Tobacco Aid Programs

The Nixon administration and Congress will not curb or end tobacco subsidy programs spending about 50 million dollars annually. Agriculture Secretary Hardin plans no changes and there is no Senate move to reduce subsidies despite calls for advertising bans and tighter controls. The programs include loan supports and a five cent per pound subsidy to exporters, plus Food for Peace funded ads for U.S. tobacco in Japan, Austria and Thailand.

Being Different Noted At Allan Hancock College Opening

Hundreds of students and faculty attended the Allan Hancock College opening day stressing the need to embrace difference as education faces rapid changes. Dan Moore of Times Mirror warned that education will evolve more than any other field in the coming decade and that children are fundamentally different from their parents. Nearby, Senator Ellender defended farm subsidies as essential to protecting farmers, noting U.S. tobacco farming supports about 625,000 families and tobacco brings roughly $1.3 billion yearly to the economy.

Welfare aid increase denied by Santa Maria Board

A Santa Maria group seeking $200,000 more for clothing grants to welfare children saw unanimous rejection from the Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Curtis Tunnell noted the county welfare budget nears 17.8 million dollars and urged that further funds not be provided locally. Theron Justice of the Welfare Rights Organization warned of seeking state help if denied.

Lompoc Drug Abuse Committee Meeting and Talks

The Lompoc Drug Abuse Committee schedules a Friday meeting at the swimming pool annex on South C Street. YMCA Summer Attendance Records Report

About 3,000 people joined the YMCA summer program from June to August as reported by Y Director Gene Doud. Cab rillo High School swim program drew 2,667 over eight weeks with 2,317 drop ins, 274 in classes, and 75 in competitive swimming.
