McClellan named SYAWD director to fill Sudden term

The Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District board unanimously appointed R B McClellan to fill the unexpired term of Charles Sudden. The move followed strong backing from Francis Beattie and a failed bid to replace him with Henry Dettamanti. Nominations for three open seats are due by Sept 15 with incumbents Richard Henning Virgil Phelps and others seeking re election in November.

Reagan warns of campus trouble at Berkeley

California Governor Ronald Reagan warned of future disturbances at the University of California Berkeley, citing intelligence that a nationwide demonstrat ion may be planned for an October date by a "silent majority" and stressing most students seek education, not disruption. He spoke during a visit with his family and discussed China policy and his view of the mainland regime as illegitimate.

Dirksen to Lie In State at Rotunda in National Tribute

President Nixon and leaders will attend a public service in the Capitol rotunda for Senate Republican Leader Everett M. Dirksen who died Sunday at 73. Dirksen will lie in state until Wednesday noon, with funeral set for 2 p.m. at National Presbyterian Church. He is one of only three senators given rotunda honors.

City study reviews chlorine safety for Lompoc groups

A three hour chlorine safety session sponsored by the Lompoc City Employer Safety Committee educated municipal industrial and federal chlorine users on emergency programs and procedures. Dale Batchelor of the Lompoc Water Treatment plant led the session, noting city owned equipment at the fire department is available to others on mutual aid. The fire department demonstrated the chlorine emergency gear at the water treatment plant, amid recent national chlorine incidents.

Spectacular Kilauea eruption lights up Hawaii night

The Kilauea volcano near Hilo exploded for nine hours on Sunday night with lava fountains reaching about 1800 feet. Ash fell like snow as crowds gathered near Volcanoes National Park and along the Chain of Craters Road.

Admission Day Observance Closes Offices Statewide

California Admission Day leads to closure of all schools banks and county and state offices tomorrow while most stores and businesses stay open with regular hours including Lompoc city offices. Record offices remain open and paper delivery continues in the afternoon.

Minor injuries in two Lompoc traffic accidents

Two Lompoc motorists sustained minor injuries in separate Saturday crashes. Jack Raymond McChesney 18 of 326 S D Street was treated at Lompoc Hospital for abrasions and lacerations after a collision at Maple Avenue and I Street with Trevo G Pounds 45 of 337 N E Street whose vehicle escaped. McChesney suffered major damage to his car while Pounds car had moderate damage. In the second crash William E Bressler 19 of 534 N C Street sprained his neck when his car collided with Michael H Kamery 16 of 300 N C Street in the 200 block of East Ocean Avenue both cars westbound. Bressler stopped for a left turn Kamery was uninjured. Bressler’s car had minor damage and Kamery’s was moderate.

Chinese Delegation Attends Ho Chi Minh Funeral in Hanoi

In Hanoi a second Chinese delegation attended Ho Chi Minh's funeral led by Li Hsien-Nien as Kosygin's Soviet group and other leaders paid respects. Chou En-Lai's earlier brief visit drew criticism from Moscow while Mao and Lin sent wreaths. tens of thousands reportedly visited the North Vietnamese Embassy in Beijing.
