Hayakawa says militants seize control in black studies program

In San Francisco President Hayakawa condemns a reign of terror in the San Francisco State College black studies program as students force classroom takeovers and threats rise. He urges caution before disbanding the department while Nathan Hare and Black Students Union push to run the program. An aftershock of a Southern California quake registers 4.0 with scattered effects but no injuries.

Firestorm in Southland Charred 4400 Acres, Homes Lost

A wind driven brush fire near Granada Hills burned 4400 acres as 500 residents evacuated. One home and two structures were destroyed, 15 horses perished at a ranch, and 4 of 700 firefighters were injured. Firefighters contained the blaze after 20 hours with support from heavy equipment and hoses. A separate Ventura County blaze near Santa Paula scorched 300 acres before being stopped.

Fissure Stabilized Says Building Officials At San Pedro

SAN PEDRO UP I The 300 foot long fissure threatening six cliffside houses appears to have stabilized somewhat police said One house slid 30 feet down a 200 foot cliff and hangs on a massive earth section Another house is a total loss while three other homes valued at 50 000 to 75 000 were abandoned earlier None of the homes is insured for slides due to California coverage shortages since the 1933 quake

Regents seek change in ban on Communist teachers

Regents ask California Court of Appeal to reverse a Superior Court ruling that allowed Communist Party members to teach, seeking a writ of mandate to void Judge Jerry Pacht’s decision. The UC petition asserts error and urges transfer of proceedings to Alameda County. Miss Davis, 25, teaches a UCLA philosophy course under the ban’s shadow.

Milias Signals Run For California Secretary of State

Assemblyman George W. Milias plans to announce his candidacy at the California Republican fall convention near Disneyland. The 49 year old Gilroy rancher and former GOP chair envisions succeeding the ailing Frank M. Jordan as secretary of state while Charles J. Conrad also weighs a bid. Jordan, 81, has suffered a stroke and cannot speak. The three day gathering features Gov Ronald Reagan and U.S. Sen George Murphy as keynote figures, with many party leaders in attendance.

Agnew Renews Attack on Demonstrators Amid Nixon Backing

Vice President Spiro Agnew, backed by President Nixon for a job well done, launched another combative broadside against antiwar demonstrators and political critics. He labeled leaders of the Oct. 15 Moratorium as impudent snobs and warned of a convulsive, potentially totalitarian society, urging action beyond street protests. He defended his stance at a Harrisburg speech and later received praise from Nixon at the White House.
