Senate moves toward ban on broadcast cigarette ads
Five years after the surgeon general report, the Senate Commerce Committee takes a tentative step toward outlawing broadcast cigarette advertising. The measure would remove a major TV advertiser, with the industry spending 217.2 million on TV ads last year.

Memorial services for Lt. Col. Nathan Giles at Vandenberg AFB
Memorial services are held at Center Chapel on Vandenberg AFB for Lt. Col. Nathan L. Giles who died Wednesday at Vandenberg AFB Hospital. Interment is planned Monday at Arlington National Cemetery. Giles, 49, served four years with Vandenberg and the Missile Evaluation Team, living with his family at 674 Korina on base. He was born September 7, 1920 in Salt Lake City. Survivors include his widow Frances, three sons Nathan Jr, Nelson Blaine, David Gilbert, two daughters Christy Blain and Catherine Elizabeth, two sisters Martha Weingartner and Virginia Groetcke, and father Nathan Giles. Funeral directions are by Newhart Family in Santa Maria.

Indecent exposure report follows two prior Lompoc incidents
Lompoc police report a third indecent exposure in town after a 10 year old girl described a nearly 15 year old boy about 5 feet 4 inches tall with brown hair who stood nude near 917 Barton Ave. The suspect allegedly undressed in the vacant house before waiting for his victim and then left the area.
