Hearings May Be Needed for Onshore Oil Drilling

The Board of Supervisors may gain authority to hold public hearings on onshore oil drilling in county territory. Assistant County Counsel Dana Smith said provisions must be clarified in the county oil drilling ordinance. Conservationists urged amendment, citing recent permit decisions for Union Oil and Tiger Oil to drill near private lands and islands.

Lompoc Building Valuations Near Double 1969

Lompoc reports total construction valuation for the year through November at $491,987, nearly double the $251,605 figure a year earlier. November added $32,978 to the total with alterations on two commercial buildings driving most of the month’s value. One single family dwelling was built this year at $12,852 versus three dwellings in 1968 by November’s end.

Candidates must take exam for 1970 Santa Barbara justice seats

Lay candidates for the 1970 Santa Barbara County justice court judgeships in Lompoc Solvang and Carpinteria must pass qualifying examinations at San Luis Obispo. The State Judicial Council announced 14 centers statewide. Three seats are up for election currently held by Pattillo Lewelen and Cox with six year terms at $12000 annually.

Union to Meet with County Chief Over Pay Dispute

Representatives of the AFL CIO Social Workers Union will meet with County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson after the Board of Supervisors rejected a higher pay ask for eligibility workers in the County Welfare Department. Union president Miss Anne Pirie said a statement may follow the meeting. The board approved 2 percent raises for eligibility workers and 5 percent for most county employees, with social workers receiving 7 percent.

Freeway pact readied for quick ratification near La Cumbre

County supervisors and the Santa Barbara City Council may swiftly approve a state freeway agreement for a 4 million dollar Hope Ave interchange on U S 101 near La Cumbre Plaza without deciding design. The pact confirms need and site, with a full design hearing to come later. Additional costs include 3 5 million for right of way and potential displacement of 40 Peace Grove homes plus land takings at Santa Barbara Automobile Center and La Cumbre Plaza areas.
