Chimpanzee Liver Transplant Used on Seven Month Old
At the University of Colorado Medical Center a chimpanzee liver was transplanted into a seven month old Seattle boy after a 14 hour operation. The infant remained in critical condition and was described as a last resort due to lack of human donor options. Reports said chimpanzee kidneys may have been transplanted briefly to curb organ rejection. The first such liver transplant at the center occurred in 1966 with a 28 month old patient dying nine days later.
