In Peking Chou En-lai met Huey Newton co founder of the Black Panthers at a national day reception. NCNA named two other Panthers Elaine Brown and Robert Bay and noted several hundred thousand celebrants across parks and factories with Tiananmen Square festively decorated.

Nixon official stabbed to death in Executive Office Building

Ritchie H. Reed 30, director of economic resources for the Commission on Population Growth and the American Future, was found stabbed about 4 p.m. in a fifth floor washroom of the new Executive Office Building near the White House. Police report no suspects and say Reed had no ID on him. he wore rings and a watch. He lived in Cheverly Maryland with his wife and no children. The death involved about 20 stab wounds and followed a violent struggle. investigators said Reed may have been robbed. The case unfolded on a floor housing Kennedy Center and White House Historical Association offices while the Passport Office was moving buildings.

United Fund aims for seventy three thousand in 1971 drive

The 1971 United Fund kickoff drew about 90 local leaders. Organ announced a $73,000 goal to fund 17 agencies, higher than last year. Mayor Scott urged community support and a push for individual gifts, while Larsson and others presented cheques totaling over 3 000.
