Thieu Wins Reelection in Landslide Victory in South Vietnam

President Nguyen Van Thieu secured a sweeping 91.5 percent of the vote in South Vietnam's uncontested presidential election, with an 87.7 percent turnout. Strikes Planned at Two McDonnell Douglas Plants

United Auto Workers chief Leonard Woodcock and Machinists head Floyd Smith plan strikes to force McDonnell Douglas to offer a new contract. They target the Canadian plant on Oct. 13, saying the industry has refused to bargain since the wage price freeze. The leaders say a 30 percent three year package is needed to match gains in other industries.

Lompoc asks review of unemployment estimates

The city of Lompoc requests a Department of Human Resources review of unemployment estimates after being skipped in allocating $433,000 in supplementary jobless aid. City officials argue Lompoc Valley may have equal or higher rates than surrounding Santa Barbara County areas. Meanwhile six local positions and about $54,000 are funded from federal job programs, with Santa Maria slated to receive about $150,000 more.

Major U.S. troop cutback in Vietnam after election

UPI reports after the Saigon vote, U S forces begin one of the largest withdrawals in two years. Four full battalions and three smaller units end their combat roles reducing strength by 3,215 troops. It marks the first ground combat pullback since Sept 15 and the biggest since July 1, 1969 under Nixon.

Senate approves second military pay raise to boost enlistments

The Senate approved a second military pay raise within a month costing 381.1 million annually to spur volunteers and recruit more. The measures, coming after a 2.4 billion prior boost, would take effect mid November after the wage price freeze ends. President Nixon backed the amendment and discussed with Sen. Gordon Allott his opposition to a two year draft continuance.
