Cojo Bay harbor plan eyed by regional supervisors

Santa Barbara and Ventura county supervisors weigh a harbor of refuge at Cojo Bay south of Pt Arguello. Beattie notes air force objections eased by reducing slips from 270 to 17 or 18. Hearing led by Robert Walker in Santa Barbara Courthouse at 9 a.m. Friday.

Buellton approves 232-site trailer park project

The County Planning Commission voted 5-0 to approve a 232-site trailer park in Buellton under a use permit, reducing from 250 sites. Rezoning to the T-Trailer Park Zone was approved for the 56-acre site on the south side of Lompoc Buellton Road east of Calor Drive. Attorney Stanley Hatch noted the project would have less density than a subdivision for homes.

Gaviota lighthouse approved with beam caution and coast guard ops

County Planning Commission approved a 90 foot lighthouse at Macco Corp seacoast village site near Gaviota with the Coast Guard to operate it. Beams must not blind motorists along U S 101. The project replaces a planned observation tower and museum and sits about three quarters of a mile east of Gaviota State Beach Park. Additionally the panel approved a 654 acre Chamberlin ranch agricultural preserve north of Los Olivos, keeping it in general farming status with an assessed value of 68 875 and about 105 per acre.

Girl 6 Escapes House Fire on Olive Avenue

A six year old girl named Kathy Elder escaped unharmed yesterday from a fire that gutted the interior of a home at 310 East Olive Avenue. She was found wandering in an alley behind her house after her mother left to run errands. Neighbors reported hearing explosions that may have come from overheated aerosol cans before the flames were seen.

Coast Guard Cadet Froehlich Begins Second Year at New London

Coast Guard Cadet Third Class Steven E. Froehlich, son of Mr and Mrs Gustav R Froehlich Jr of Lompoc California, starts his second academic year at the Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut. He plans to graduate in June 1973 with a bachelor of science and a commission as Ensign.

El Capitan Ranch May Not Push 10 Acre Lot Plan

County officials indicated Jules Berman’s El Capitan Ranch is unlikely to seek county approval for a 10 acre lot development before the November general election. A tentative 17 lot plan on 178 acres faced opposition from a lawyers committee urging disapproval or delay for further staff study citing conflicts with the county general plan.

Lompoc Soldier Injured After Cliff Fall at Fort Lawton

A Lompoc soldier, Charles Olmstead, 28, was rescued after a two day ordeal at a Seattle cliff 150 to 200 feet high. He was seriously injured with a broken back, arm, skull fracture and severed spinal cord, in fair condition at Madigan General Hospital Seattle. Olmstead, AWOL since May 29 from Fort MacArthur, fell while fleeing MPs at Fort Lawton. He is married and the son of Charles C. Olmstead of Vandenberg Village. The elder Olmstead said doctors told him his son would likely not walk again. The family noted a despondent view of the war and a growing religious attitude after his wounding.
