D A to appeal heroin case decision in Lompoc

District Attorney David D Milner will appeal a Superior Court ruling that reduced a jury verdict of sale of heroin to possession. Ronald Riola 21 of Santa Maria was convicted by a Santa Maria jury for sale and possession of heroin and seconal near Lompoc High School. The judge cut the verdict to simple possession, affecting potential sentences of up to five years to life down to two to ten years.

Unemployment at highest level in nearly seven years

The unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in September, the highest in nearly seven years, with 4.3 million jobless. Most increases were among men aged 16 to 24, while overall non farm employment held at 70.4 million after seasonal adjustment. Car smashes window. Walker arrested on drunken hit and run

Police arrested Charles Walden Walker, 27, of Vandenberg AFB after he rammed his car into the window of R J Meier Ltd at 135 N H St and fled. Bail set at 640 dollars. Walker faces charges of drunk driving hit and run and lane straddling. Sergeant jailed for assault in Lompoc case

Air Force Staff Sergeant Emmie Yearling age 25 faced court action in Lompoc on charges of assaulting his wife Linda Ann Yearling 20 and sister in law Ruby Jean Fritz 27 with a screwdriver during a martial dispute. Bail set at 3000 dollars after Yearling was booked at Lompoc Jail. Police said both women received puncture wounds and the weapon was seized.

Out of control brush blaze forces college evacuation

A 40,000 acre blaze driven by 70 mph desert winds forced the evacuation of 4,500 students at Chaffey Junior College in Cucamonga. The fire threatened Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests as crews fought to contain it. seven homes were destroyed and Mount Baldy village was evacuated. California’s Laguna fire near San Diego was contained at 80 percent.
