Senate approves broad campaign finance reform bill
The Senate passed a major campaign finance reform bill to ban private contributions to congressional or presidential candidates and provide taxpayer financed elections. It would pay candidates from the Treasury: House members 90000, Senators 175000, and the President 21000000, aiming to curb donor influence. Despite support from figures like Roosevelt and Agnew, obstacles remain as the measure trails in passage and moves to a House-Senate conference after final Senate approval on a 57 to 34 vote.
