Del Mar Packing Buys Wilson and Harcourt Lands for Lettuce

Del Mar Packing Company of Oxnard buys the 70 acre Wilson property and the five acre Harcourt parcel on Flag Is Up Farms to grow lettuce and cucumbers in the Lompoc Valley. Mike Shannon says the acquisition diversifies crops and fortifies against market dips, with lettuce and cucumbers planned for spring planting and an extended season from the Harcourt land. Del Mar retains an option on part of the Wilson acreage and expects 1,500 valley acres in production next year including Union Sugar property.

Gas crisis feared in California next month amid fuel shortage

Southern California Automobile Club officials warned a gas shortage could pinch travel in about a month. They opposed higher fuel taxes and urged consideration of southern commuter needs if rationing occurs.

Hancock College to add midday bus from Santa Maria to Lompoc

Hancock College will run a 1 p.m. bus from its Santa Maria campus to Lompoc on a trial basis starting next Monday. President Walter Conrad cited a recent poll showing half of current riders could use the midday return and noted a petition from 34 families supporting the service. The change requires trustees approval and was considered amid concerns over diesel fuel shortages.
