US pressing Israel to soften stance in stalled talks

Diplomatic sources in Cairo say the United States is pressing Israel to soften its position in the deadlocked Egypt Israel negotiations, aiding the 24 hour postponement request for today’s session. Arab leaders vow no peace without returning occupied lands and Jerusalem. Six meetings since Nov 11 focus on disengagement with Talk of a possible shift in Israel’s stance.

Detroiter hijacked to Needles then set ablaze car

James G. Dotson of Ypsilanti, Michigan, said two hitchhikers aboard his car abducted him in Detroit and drove west to Needles, California, where they dumped him and set the vehicle on fire. He escaped and returned to Michigan by bus. In Santa Cruz a private lab announced a gas stretcher EC 100 that boosted mileage from 10.91 to 12.54 mpg in 200 cars tested.

Lompoc Dam project details spark water plan debate

County water officials discussed the Lompoc Project as a potential terminal reservoir for the State Project and a water saver for the Santa Ynez watershed. They noted lack of reply from Lompoc on repayment to the Bureau of Reclamation and questioned costs including about 4.5 million dollars annually for water and 1 million for recreation. Critics warned of harming agricultural land while supporters argued for feasibility tests and possible bureau funding for updated studies plus inclusion of Salsipuedes Dam considerations.

Saul E. Bramer, a metallurgist, files in U S District Court claiming a July 21 1971 radiation leak at Los Alamos AEC laboratory left him carrying embedded radioactive particles. He alleges inadequate safety, exposure while near a leaking hot cell, and ingestion of plutonium 238 dioxide.

Morton orders oil shale lands opened

Interior Secretary Rogers C. Morton announced opening western oil shale lands to development and said a right-of-way permit for the 789 mile Trans Alaska pipeline will be issued within two weeks. The move was described as a milestone by Aleyeska Pipeline Co president Edward L. Patton.
