Justice Council approves addition of paid staff in region

The Regional Advisory Board of the California Council on Criminal Justice in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties voted to hire an expert in research and analysis reporting to coordinator Brian McBride. The panel also rejected an outside systems analysis in favor of internal staff expansion to cut crime by 25 percent.

Scholastic chess tourney set for December 21 in Lompoc

Lompoc records announces the first ever scholastic chess tournament on December 21 with an expected 400 entries from grades one through 12. Organizers include Maj. Louis A. Baker and Newman Whitmire with support from the school district and the Lompoc Record.

Obituary for Lawrence Johnston Dies in Bellflower

Funeral services were held at Colonial Chapel in Bellflower for Lawrence Johnston 72 who died Wednesday. A former Lompoc resident he operated Merks Motel with his son Buford Johnston and lived in Bellflower before moving here seven years ago. Born 1898 in Kansas he is survived by Lola his widow Buford of Los Alamitos and two grandchildren Joyce and Glenn Johnston.

County Collects First Million in 1970 Taxes

The county tax collector reports 1 278 000 dollars collected so far this year with Nov receipts beginning after mailing a 69 million tax bill. Deadline for first installments is Dec 10 with a six percent penalty thereafter. Funds go to the general fund, cities, schools and special districts. The county still relies on a 3 5 million bank loan until late in the year as receipts are apportioned.

The Record notes closing stock quotations via Rohrbaugh and Co. of Lompoc. It also reports the Black Hills Passion Play, brought from Lunen Germany in 1932, now staged in Spearfish South Carolina.
