UC Berkeley chancellor Roger Heyns quits with reluctance after five years marked by student protests and violence. President Hitch and Regents mourn the decision. Heyns plans to leave by June, returning to Michigan faculty.

Climbers at El Capitan spurn rescue plan amid storm threat

Two climbers Warren Harding and Dean Caldwell suspended 2,000 feet above Yosemite Valley refused helicopter rescue as storm looms. Rangers had prepared a 26 man operation after 22 days on the wall with scarce food and poor weather. Harding said they could reach the top, Caldwell did not want help.

U S stance on Red China at United Nations debate

The United States reiterated opposition to admitting the People's Republic of China to the United Nations while signaling openness to a two China approach. UPI reports Ambassador Phillips stressed avoiding expulsion of any member while pressing for constructive roles and longer term U.S. aims for Peking dialogue amid debate on the seating vote.

Five Santa Ana fires burn near Riverside, destroy homes

Five brush fires raged near Riverside driven by 60 mph Santa Ana winds. They blackened about 6000 acres of watershed in heavy timber terrain. At least three homes were destroyed. Rim of the World district schools were closed as a precaution with no structures reported in immediate danger.

City police chief transfer set for Monday in stake shift

City Administrator Gene Wahlers announced that Chief of Police Ray Robertson will move to Director of Public Safety and Assistant Chief James Smith will become Acting Chief on Monday. Robertson plans a two week vacation and is to report November 30 in his new role after his son’s Navy leave. The new post, to be funded by federal aid, also replaces the assistant chief position and oversees safety, records, training, civil defense, and disaster programs. Robertson has 22 years with the department, eight as chief. Smith has served since 1967.

New State Proposed by Israel During UCLA Speech

Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban told about 4,500 UCLA students he prefers immediate talks with Jordan and proposed a Palestinian Arab state along both sides of the Jordan River as part of a Mideast solution. Arabs clashed with counter demonstrators outside the Pauley Pavilion and one student was injured. Eban cited unresolved ceasefire violations by Egypt over missiles near the Suez Canal and said Meir would announce future actions to parliament.

Dignitaries pay final respects to De Gaulle

A wreath from Soviet leader Podgorny led a procession of foreign dignitaries to De Gaulle's grave in Colombey as Gen. de Gaulle was laid to rest. Soviet Marshal Chuikov delivered the tribute to the French leader and spoke to Philippe de Gaulle. Ten African chiefs of state joined the solemn last rites.
