California urged to grant faculty pay raises for 1971 72

The Coordinating Council for Higher Education urged Governor Reagan and legislators to grant 11.2 and 13 percent pay raises for UC and state colleges in 1971 72. The council backed university and college requests, approved fringe benefit raises, and planned a new Grossmont campus while outlining upcoming governance changes.

Railroad wage board urges 32.5 percent rise with rule changes

A presidential board proposed a 32.5 percent wage increase for 500 000 rail workers with work rule changes to curb featherbedding. It also urged a joint industry labor panel led by a neutral chair to pursue long term reforms. The recommendations, from Nixon appointees, are nonbinding but require 30 days’ cooling off.

Convicted killer released after 30 years in prison

Verlin Spencer, 69, released on parole from California Medical Facility in Vacaville after 30 years for a 1940 shooting spree that killed five, starts a new life with the Salvation Army in Hawaii assisting parolees. He was a junior high principal in South Pasadena before the attack.

A 17 year old girl testified she lied about Tate Sabianca slayings fearing Manson family members would kill her. Dianne Lake admitted lying about her whereabouts during the August 1969 killings and said she was at Spahn Ranch. She cited fear and commands from Charles Manson as reasons for the deception.

Cambodian troops withdraw as Communist push advances near Troeung

Cambodian government spokesman says forces tactically withdrew from Troeung on Highway 7 45 miles northeast of Phnom Penh amid heavy Communist attacks. Reinforcements head toward the town as sappers blow a major bridge cutting traffic to Skoung. several guards killed or wounded. In Saigon area, two Americans killed and 13 wounded as U.S. helicopter downed and troops attacked near the 25th Infantry Division position.

Weather Across Nation Sees Clouds Rain and Snow

United Press International reports a cloudy rainy Midwest from the Gulf to the upper Great Lakes with heavier storms in the north central Alabama area. Dothan records an inch of rain while two inches of snow fall at Owyhee Nevada and snow showers dot Idaho Montana Nevada and central California. The Eastern Seaboard stays fair and dry with clear skies across the southern Plains to the Dakotas.

Mrs Thoresen Describes Husband as Insane Monster

Louise Thoresen on trial for killing her husband William E. Thoresen III described him as insane and said he hired a man to murder his brother, then killed the triggerman with a hammer and pistol. She testified she shot in self defense after abuse and coercion.
