Teachers honored at LEA banquet in Lompoc

The Lompoc Educational Association honored five teachers with annual Who trophies at their banquet held at the Village Country Club. Recipients were Paul Donowick, Betty Herron, Betty Steward, Dorothy Wagner and Newman Whitmire, with professional improvement awards going to Dean Anderson, Jeff Brewton, Willadine Leverett, Don Lisle, Jack Lundy and Howard Shaw. Superintendent Glen Wegner presented the awards before about 100 members and guests. Nominees for the Who awards are selected by a teachers’ poll.

Council Cancels Study Session on Business License Amendments

The study session on proposed amendments to the Business License Ordinance was canceled and the council set the next meeting for June 3 after a vote at yesterday’s session.

Water Agency hears talks on river project and water rights

At a meeting the Santa Ynez District urged blocking the project in favor of Feather River imports. Santa Barbara and Lompoc officials urged delay pending State Water Board decisions on water rights below Lake Cachuma. Endorsements from local groups and Maj. Gen. Gerald Johnson were read as discussions continued.

Fourth straight set of twins to couple

In Warren Michigan a couple, Vivian and Joe Amico, welcomed their fourth consecutive set of twins. Doctors call Mrs Amico a super ovulator and odds were about 1 in a million. The family ends nine years of twin births with two healthy newborn twin daughters.

Lompoc Shopkeeper Fends Off Robbers Again

Julia Sumner of 64 fought off two robbers at her shop in Lompoc California for the second time in a month. She grabbed one by the lapels as they knocked her under the counter and vowed to keep fighting. A judge had earlier praised her bravery in the prior incident.
