Memorial Day Observance in Lompoc by Legion Post 211

Memorial Day services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery Legion plot with Rev. Andrew McGrath speaker and Elmer Brown leading. The Lompoc Junior High Band, Vandenberg AFB firing squad, and wreath by Legion Auxiliary and DAR will be featured. Public offices close. some markets open. La Purisima church hosts masses at 8 and 9 a.m. The Lompoc Record will publish as usual.

Moon landing rehearsal shown in Apollo 10 films

SPACE CENTER Houston reports Apollo 10 crews rehearsed the final lunar approach with mission control in Houston as if real. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin practiced the descent and landing scenes, filming 205 feet of movie footage and 86 color photographs for a roadmap to the July lunar touchdown. Site 2 lies in the Sea of Tranquility as camera jostling limited footage of the prime landing site.

Trial transfer sought in bribery case

Los Angeles Superior Court must show cause by July 15 why the bribery and perjury trial of Lompos rancher Keith Smith should not move to another county. Smith faces a $12 million city contract dispute over a World Trade Center project at Los Angeles Harbor as his defense cites prejudicial media coverage. The earlier venue appeal was denied and trial was postponed pending the state court of appeal decision.

Army reveals anthrax contamination at Dugway site

The Army disclosed it contaminated a 100 square yard area at Dugway Proving Grounds with a small amount of anthrax bacteria to study hazard duration. Officials deem the risk minimal due to remoteness, with the site fenced and signposted.

Marine resigns seeks sanctuary at Whittier church

Terrell Allan Chambers, 19, a Marine recruit, sought sanctuary at Whittier Unitarian Church two weeks after two servicemen were arrested there. The church granted sanctuary after a 66 to 17 vote by the congregation. Chambers said he would not serve in the armed forces or any violent organization citing brutality toward servicemen.

Tanks and aircraft hit Communist meeting near Saigon

U.S. troops aided by tanks, aircraft, and artillery attacked a Communist strategy meeting northwest of Saigon near Trang Bang during Buddha birthday truce. About 59 defenders were killed. 1 American dead and 4 wounded. The assault involved 800 U.S. troops from the 25th Division with air and ground support. The truce began 7 a.m. local time.

Peace talks degenerate after sharp verbal battle in Paris

UPI report from Paris says the Vietnam peace talks collapsed into the strongest exchange yet with both sides denouncing the other's proposals. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge called the Communist demand for unilateral U.S. withdrawal unreasonable, while deputy negotiator Ha Van Lau rejected mutual withdrawal and attacked President Nixon's eight point plan.

A 14 year old, Julio Garcia, took the family car in Lompoc and hit a parked car on North Fifth Street then struck three more parked cars before stopping near Pine Avenue and Fifth Street. He was uninjured, the four parked cars sustained damage, and the incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. No charges are listed.

Lompoc Officer Cited for Bravery in LA County Arrest

Vacationing Lompoc officer Richard De Lung, 29, cited for bravery in aiding a Torrance motorcycle officer during a narcotics arrest in Los Angeles County. Lt. Douglas Cook praised De Lung for risking his safety and helping capture two suspects, urging permanent inclusion of the letter in his personnel file. De Lung joined Lompoc Police on March 16, 1965.

Hearing set in Lompoc shooting case for June 6

James Tony Scalise 50 of Santa Barbara faces a Santa Maria Superior Court hearing June 6 on charges from the April 23 Lompoc shooting of Richard Smith 40. Scalise waived preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty after police seized a .32 caliber pistol. Smith was wounded in the leg and foot in the 100 block of North Street. Scalise was arrested nearby.
