The Sixth Army Pipe Band, based at the Presidio in San Francisco, will join a Floral Parade. Pipe Major Victor Albert Biswell, from Piedmont California, joined in 1948 and led the band after six years of competition success. Drum Major Richard Kent Kirkland, from Alameda, California, has served three years with the pipes. Organizers urge floats to coordinate themes with the Chamber of Commerce to avoid duplication. parade theme is Melodies in Flowers with ample flowers for all floats.

Mormon chapel rises as Lompoc group grows

The Lompoc Mormon ward evolved from a 1939 Sunday school to a fully organized ward by November 29, 1953 with Harlan Swanger as bishop. Site ground breaking occurred March 14, 1953, first on site meeting November 8, 1953, and construction was mainly done by volunteers. Louis Thomas of Los Angeles was the architect.

Funeral Notices for Starcher Costa and Hartland Family

City schools plan yearlong swimming program at pool

Superintendent Charles Lockwood unveiled a tentative plan for grades 11 and 12 to have weekly one hour swimming classes all year with separate boys and girls groups. The program aims to use the municipal pool extensively during off hours and could be adjusted by cost and experience. City officials at the meeting included Councilman Ray Jacobs City Clerk Charles Laubly and Recreation Director Ted Grant with school board representatives William Sudden Kenneth Stillman and school administrators Frank McCall Henry Hellekson.
