Milton Larsen is first vice commander, John McCarthy second vice commander, Harley Craig veterans service officer, and Irving Plo adjutant. Installation will be held with district posts. C R Ball Jr of Richfield Oil spoke on oil field life histories during an oil conservation program.
City records show for the first ten months of the fiscal year sales tax receipts in Lompoc totaled 34,136.40 dollars, up from 29,829.72 dollars a year earlier, a gain of 4,306.68 dollars reflecting a rise in tax subject sales.
Richard Newcomb and Carl Negus of Lompoe High School have been chosen to represent the valley at Boys State in Sacramento June 16 to 23. Selection was based on scholarship and leadership by a teachers and American Legion committee led by Harry Morris and G Fr Learned. The program gathers top students to study city county and state government in the Capitol.
Kindergarten registration will be held Tuesday May 22 from 8 30 a m to 11 30 a m and from 1 00 p m to 4 00 p m in the Lom poe Elementary kindergarten building north of the main building on North H Street. To be eligible attend kinder sign up see Page 8.
The mercury reached 97 degrees in Lompoc, the warmest May day on record. Officials cited a 96 degree reading earlier and a pattern of rising temperatures after a cool spell, with a weekend forecast for moderate conditions.
City Attorney Carl Kappler ordered to file suit against Alfonso Scolari for violation of the anti shack ordinance. Council pressed to abate alleged nuisance after building inspector Emil Scolari cited insufficient repair work on a North H street dwelling and no new extension advisable.
Utilities propose raising the minimum water rate from 1.75 to 2.00 monthly and boosting basic garbage collection by 33 percent to offset higher equipment and material costs. A final decision will wait budget meetings as department needs are clarified, with the average Lompoc family using up to 1000 cubic feet monthly. For usage above 1000 cubic feet, the rate rises by one cent per 100 cubic feet.
The first community wide committee meeting for the children’s portion of the Flower Festival parade is called by chairman Mrs Merilyn Lair for Thursday May 24. The meeting starts at 7 00 p m in the annex of the Community Center and invites anyone willing to help with the event.
Seventy Lompoe school teachers including three principals receive contracts for the 1956 57 year from trustees of two districts. Elementary district contracts go to principals Gilbert Martin Frank P McCall and many teachers including Dorothy Allen and Laura Bevill.
The city launches a summer Learn To Swim program through August 31 aimed at beginners aged 8 to 18. The first 15-session course runs June 11 to June 29 with six classes daily 8:30 to 11:30 from Monday to Friday. Subsequent sessions start July 2 July 25 and August 23. Funeral services for John I Jack Henning take place at 2 oclock in the Starbuck chapel with Rev Bernard Brewster officiating. Interment follows in Evergreen Cemetery with the Odd Fellows lodge conducting. Henning, born January 4, 1909 in Lompoc, son of Clarence W. and the late Mrs Henning, attended Cal Poly and worked for Johns Manville and as a farmer. Survived by wife Bernice and daughter Billie Jean Turin. pallbearers named as Joe Gill, William Schuyler, Darrell Schuyler, Ed Larsen, Matt Howerton, Emil Scolari.
