A columnist vents frustration with aging highways like Orcutt grade and San Julian, contrasting Roman roads and early Model T times with today’s traffic. Kenneth E. Richardson chair of literature and modern languages at Westmont College will be the baccalaureate speaker at Lompoc High School on Sunday June 3. Richardson, known as interim pastor of First Baptist, is a 1950 Westmont graduate who returned as professor and department chair in 1953 and has a Ford Foundation scholarship to attend Claremont Graduate School. His talk titled The Perils of Thought will be joined by Rev Bernard Brewster Rev Charles Wright and Chaplain D L Barrick. Seventy five seniors graduate in the Class of 56 with commencement next Thursday evening in the school auditorium.
Lompoc High School is named recipient of the San Luis Obispo conference Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year. Superintendent Charles Lockwood lauds the school board and community for their effort and spirit in interscholastic competition.
Auditor Albert Eaves told the Board of Supervisors the 1956 57 preliminary budget shows a property tax need of 4 147 205 to meet expenses, down from 4 578 024 last year. He cited lower general fund expenditures and higher general fund revenues as factors in a better financial position, with potential for building and service while keeping tax rates well below the state average.

The State Fire Marshal's office requires plastering and sprinklers for the auditorium project, adding about 5000 to the cost and delaying bids until mid June. Bids for a new home economics building were scheduled for June 13 with an estimated cost near 104,700 dollars. Tonight bids will be opened for resurfacing parts of the elementary playground.
John Bursom installed the newly elected officers of the Lompoc and Santa Maria American Legion posts Sunday afternoon at the Veterans Memorial building with the Lompoc post hosting. Gus Hargens named commander. Milton Larsen first vice commander. John McCarthy second vice commander. Irving Plo adjutant. Richard Harmon chaplain. M. Nasato sergeant at arms. Jack Carr historian. John Poloni trustee. Al Johnson judge advocate. Harry Morris finance officer. Hargens succeeds Harmon as head of the Lompoc veterans group.
Voters in the Fourth District total 2 786 eligible for Tuesday’s primary with Democratic voters 1 485 to Republican 1 277 and 24 unpledged. Cross filing common in congressional and legislative races. Richards runs Democratic U S Senate ticket while Johnson and Pritchard run Republican tickets. Incumbent Kuchel likely wins GOP Senate nomination and may seek Democratic ballot. Teague vs Stewart contest for House seat noted with warning from past races. Jaccquemain opposes Hollister for State Senate as Ward’s successor. See Page 2.
The Santa Barbara County School Boards Association holds its annual meeting at the Lompoc Grange Hall 435 North G Street on Monday June 4 A barbecue dinner is served at 630 p m reservations due by May 31 Guest speaker is Dr Lloyd D Bernard of the UC Bureau of School and College Placement Legislative candidates J J Hollister and Arnold W Jacquemain and Assembly candidates James L Holmes and Timothy I O Reilly will address the group The June 4 meeting is the final of three annual meetings to honor outgoing board members
A 24 ton tank was placed in the hospital basement during modernization. The Sunday 20-30 club, led by Laurence Cazenave and Tony Domingos, with crew members Bill Perry Jr, Clay Kern, Toby Hooker, Bob Eckert and Bob Decker, cut the tank into pieces for removal. A smaller tank will replace it.
Two floral floats will represent the United States Daughters of Bachelors and the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce in the Elks Parade. The color guard for grand marshal Lt Gen Robert N Young will come from USCB. The Chamber float symbolizes Melodies in Flowers for the Floral Festival June 23. Local groups including City Council Scout Troop 63 and the high school band join junior and senior horsemen led by Nancy Swanson Arlen Elms Lucille Grossini Edward Newman Andrew Huyck Louis Costa. Robert Lower chairs the float committee seeking about 50 volunteers to decorate at Beattie Motors garage starting 7:00 tomorrow evening.
Mrs. Carlisle Stadley announces registration for Lompoc Beginners Swim Classes on Thursday May 31 and Friday June 1 from 3 to 5 PM at the Community Center. Registration requires admission tickets: children 15 cent ticket for $2, teens 15 cent ticket for $3.50. Committee includes Mrs. Luke Mathis, Mrs. Wm. Alexander, Mrs. Willard Taylor, Mary Chilson, and Mrs. Carlisle Stadley.
Lompoc Valley stayed cool and comfortable through the week with average highs near 65 degrees and lows around 49. The weekly high reached 70 on Friday while Monday night fell to 42 degrees.
Mr and Mrs C L White from Southern California stopped at the Record office for bearings on the city. City officials puzzled by a fire truck roaring across the mesa outside town but learned the equipment was headed to assist Santa Maria where the fire was.
