National Guard Called After OSU Campus Riot

About 5 000 National Guardsmen were deployed to Ohio State University to prevent external agitation amid student violence in downtown Columbus. Gov. Rhodes ordered troops after several hundred militants looted stores and smashed windows, injuring at least 10 and arresting about 10 others. A curfew and liquor permit suspensions were imposed in the campus area. Police clashes began after a peaceful campus rally drew some 6 000 people.

Violence erupts on campus as guards deploy tear gas

Police used tear gas as students retreated and guards were ordered to duty. Off-duty officers were recalled and about 200 highway patrolmen joined the scene. Officials said outside agitators caused the violence and warned would-be visitors to stay away while the campus was ringed for security.

City Summer School Dates Revised Due to Holiday Law

Summer school at Lompuc and Cabrillo High Schools shifts start times from the planned dates to June 12 with different daily starts. Elementary session runs June 22 to July 24 with July 3 as a holiday.

Judge withdraws restraining order on Reagan voice commercials

In Sacramento UPI Gov Ronald Reagan failed to keep a temporary halt on Proposition 8 radio ads using his remarks. Judge William Gallagher dissolved the restraining order after a closed meeting, with arguments to resume Tuesday on a possible injunction to bar the spots.

Defector Vo Thanh Tong Seen as High Ranking Communist Official

A 44 year old Communist financial expert once in Phnom Penh defected to South Vietnam, possibly the war's highest ranking defector. He arrived with Vietnamese refugees and turned himself in to Saigon authorities on May 12 after reuniting with family. He reportedly held civilian rank akin to brigadier general. Interrogations at the National Interrogation Center are being conducted under Lt. Gen. Do Cao Tri.

Reagan tax revision plan seeks near 600 million first-year relief

The plan raises about 600 million for 1970 by boosting taxes on individuals and businesses. It earmarks 388 million for property tax relief by raising the Homeowners exemption to 1,000 and granting a 20 percent reduction on remaining assessed value. Other features include payroll withholding, higher sales tax to six cents, a 50 tax credit for renters, a 20 percent cut in business inventory tax, state and local welfare cost sharing, open space funding, and higher senior citizen relief.
