The House backed a 5 percent hike in Social Security benefits for about 26.2 million elderly, plus higher payroll taxes and a automatic cost of living adjustment plan. Benefits rise Jan 1 to 106.20 for a single retiree and 208.50 for a widow with two children. payroll tax on earnings above 9,000 would total 468 annually. The bill heads to the Senate with uncertain prospects for the automatic COLA mechanism.
Candidates for Assembly State Senate and Congress will meet voters Monday at Lompoc High School cafeteria in a LEA sponsored night. Expected speakers include J Tim Terry Republican Kenneth A Palmer Democrat and Gary Hart Harold Keith Democratic Congress contenders.
