House approves 5 percent Social Security boost in 1961 plan

The House backed a 5 percent hike in Social Security benefits for about 26.2 million elderly, plus higher payroll taxes and a automatic cost of living adjustment plan. Benefits rise Jan 1 to 106.20 for a single retiree and 208.50 for a widow with two children. payroll tax on earnings above 9,000 would total 468 annually. The bill heads to the Senate with uncertain prospects for the automatic COLA mechanism.

Reagan urges Senate pass property tax relief package

Gov. Ronald Reagan hailed his tax relief plan as a major victory and urged the Senate to approve it quickly. He warned against Proposition 8, which he calls a fraud, as California voters prepare for a June 2 ballot. The package would fund property tax relief through withholding, a higher sales tax, and targeted tax changes, with staged revenue totaling about $600 million in the first year and $1 billion by 1974. The measures passed the Assembly and moved to the Senate, backed by a minority of Democrats.

Calm urged at Jackson State funeral amid unrest

Negro leader Charles Evers urged calm at the funeral for James Earl Green, 17, as Mississippi Governor John Bell Williams mobilized 1,300 National Guardsmen and alerted 10,000 more over the state. Tensions rose after Green and Phillip Gibbs, 21, were killed during a rock throwing demonstration at Jackson State College, with public schools closed and a federal grand jury probe sought by congressmen.

New York sextuplets die within seven hours of birth

A New York mother, Susan Danoff, delivered sextuplets five girls and a boy born three months premature weighing under four pounds each. All six died within seven hours of birth, the first four dying within two hours, the last two by about seven hours after delivery.

Goodwin Knight Dies at 74 Former California Governor

Former California governor Goodwin J. Knight died at 74 in Daniel Freeman Hospital after pneumonia. He served as governor from August 1953 to January 1959 and withdrew from the 1962 gubernatorial race due to a hepatitis attack.
