Reagan welfare plan loses in Assembly

The Democratic controlled Assembly narrowly passed AB3508 to abolish the CWEP work-for-welfare program. Assemblyman Foran called CWEP a complete failure while Assemblyman Arnett argued the program was premature to end after less than two years of a three year trial.

Wedworth leads rebellion against media blackout in California race

Sen. James Q. Wedworth urged 11 Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls to join a protest against what he calls a press blackout. He says minor candidates get little coverage despite meeting legal requirements. Across the state, 300 off duty CHP officers and families picketed in Los Angeles demanding higher pay.

Appeals to SLA Leaders to Surrender and Live

No state impact of energy crisis on California economy

California’s Department of Finance reports no adverse effects from the energy crisis on the state economy. A bi monthly review shows total wage and salary employment reaching 7.73 million in March, up 3.8 percent from a year earlier, with gains centered in trade manufacturing service and construction sectors.

Tornadoes Reported Across Plains and Dakotas Amid Warm Humidity

Nationwide warm, humid conditions produced tornadoes in the Plains from west of Childress Texas to Maddock North Dakota where a grain bin and aircraft hangar were destroyed. A flash flood watch was in effect for South Dakota as rain fell in the northern Rockies and Montana. Temperatures ranged from 28 in Houston Maine to 80 in Fort Lauderdale Florida.

Roth Underdog Campaign Builds Momentum Ahead of California Primary

Democrat William Matson Roth, a 57 year old San Francisco businessman and UC regent, campaigns across northern California in a self funded bid for governor. He trails in polls but sees rising enthusiasm in towns from Willows to Chico as he criticizes rivals for corporate donations. Crowds vary from five to about 600 at Chico State University.

Bill to tax Nixon moves to Assembly floor

Republican backed AB3023 would require California income tax from anyone who votes in the state. It targets Nixon and other California officials who work in Washington. The measure passed the Revenue and Taxation Committee 11-0, aiming to close a representation without taxation loophole. Nixon recently paid 5081 dollars in back taxes, penalties, and interest.

Victim dies in series of car crashes near Rome

Biagio Di Crescenzo, 23, was badly injured after crashing his car into a tree. He later died when ambulances transporting him to Rome collided with other vehicles. Police noted parallels to Nixon era tactics in accompanying commentary.
