St. Clair: Nixon will defy subpoenas in impeachment inquiry

James D. St. Clair indicated Nixon would refuse two subpoenas from the House Judiciary Committee seeking 11 tape recordings and diary entries from 1972 and 1973. St. Clair said he would reply in writing and noted many conversations were not taped.

County approves larger budget for narcotics task force

County supervisors approved a 330 227 dollar budget for fiscal year 1974 75 to expand the narcotics task force. The county share rises from about 121 000 to 174 580 with the Justice Department funding the rest. The plan adds an investigator and narcotics analyst. Sheriff’s Lt. George Bregante heads the unit, with some positions funded by grants. Supervisor Frost questioned use of paid informers and criticized a raid on Isla Vista locations as political.

Magruder receives 10 month sentence in Watergate case

Jeb Stuart Magruder, No. 2 official in Nixon's 1972 re election group, is sentenced by Judge Sirica to a minimum of 10 months in a federal minimum security prison. He pleads guilty to conspiracy and says ambition corrupted his judgment as he reflects on his role and family strain.

Porter Wins Early Release From FCI Scandal Term

Herbert L. Porter, former scheduling director of the Committee to Re-elect the President, began one year of probation after a sentence starting with 30 days in a federal prison. He was released three days early for good behavior from FCI Lompoc where he entered April 22. Porter admitted lying to the FBI about campaign funds and later testified he gave the money to G. Gordon Liddy.

Village youth dies after cliff fall near Pt Arguello

Cabrillo High School senior Gary Bunch 18 died at Marian Hospital after a fall from a cliff a mile south of Pt Arguello during a Friday hike with Vince Smith 17. Coast guardsmen aided in rescue and evacuation from rugged terrain. Funeral services were pending.
