Israel claims two MiGs in dogfight over Suez Canal

Israel said its pilots interrupted a four hour air strike along the Suez Canal to shoot down two Egyptian MiG21 fighters and damage a third in their first dogfight since Soviet pilots reportedly joined Cairo defense. Cairo reported a dogfight with no losses on either side. Fighting also occurred on the Israeli-Lebanese border after a Lebanese withdrawal.

Fireworks fund drive kicks off in Lompoc for Fourth display

Lompoc Fire Department announces an early campaign to raise about 2500 dollars to cover Fourth of July costs at Huyck Stadium. Canisters will sit in local stores and donations may be mailed to the department. Chief John Baker warns admission charges are an option but not favored.

Santa Maria Arts Festival rescheduled for weekend

The Santa Maria Arts Festival, delayed by Allan Hancock College closure, will run Saturday and Sunday on campus with free admission. Activities include art demos exhibits dance recitals and music. Highlights feature the college pep band Joe Berta Ri ghetti Madrigal Singers and various demonstrations and performances.

Parks Commission pushes for immediate part time help

The Parks and Recreation Commission urged City Council to hire part time park maintenance staff daily before year's end. About 5,000 dollars is budgeted for seven parks, but only two part time workers have been hired so far. A full time supervisor for teen activities is planned for January 1971, adding to two existing leaders. The panel also seeks working drawings for Senior Citizens and Community Center buildings at Ryon Park.

Chamber takes no action on AB908

Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce delayed action on Assembly Bill 908 after a talk opposing its passage by Lompoc Mayor Art Scott. The group will review the bill with the City Council next Monday night before deciding. The bill would require 23 California cities to tax their city owned utility companies. Thornton vows busy week as sheriff bid unfolds with stops in Santa Maria Carp oria Santa Barbara Goleta Hope Ranch Orcutt and more. He says the timetable helps him hear voters and discuss law enforcement issues.

Local photo contest winners named from six schools

Six Lompoc and Cabrillo High School students won 245 in a Scholastic Magazine Eastman Kodak Co national photo contest. Winners include Alan George with 100 for first in still life and 25 and two tens in scenic categories, Paul Paoli with 50 second in animal, and other 10s for Jon Singer Bob McKenzie Mike Burke and Paul Clark under guidance of photography teachers Jay Ratcliff and Greg Hyatt.

Man shoots 3 hospital officials in Danville VA complex

Colman G Gish, 45, who had received psychiatric treatment at the VA hospital, is sought for killing three hospital officials and wounding one. He drove through the 265 acre facility in 20 minutes, with no clear motive.

Car Crash in Mission Hills Injures Woman Minor

Mrs. Marjorie Er rett Jones, 46, of 1583 Calle Primera, Mission Hills, sustained minor injuries in a collision with a parked car owned by David Castro of Santa Barbara. Jones planned private medical treatment. her car suffered major damage. The incident occurred at 7 25 a m on Calle Primera according to the California Highway Patrol.
