Budget bill expands Reagan plan amid tax hike drive

The Assembly Ways and Means Committee expanded Reagan's proposed 1971-72 state budget by 318 million to 7.1 billion, boosting education and salary increases while keeping programs intact. The panel approved welfare and Medi-Cal funding and used 348 million from the cash reserve to balance the budget.

Reagan Welfare Reform Revised to Protect Counties

Sacramento officials report Reagan's welfare reform was rewritten to avoid shifting costs to counties and to limit state tax return inspections. The changes keep AFDC cost sharing, retain disabled person definitions, and promise net savings for counties though some provisions still face opposition and further hearings.

Revival of SST program faces costly, prolonged effort

Boeing officials say reviving the supersonic transport will require study and money as most of the 7000 pink slips have been issued and the SST factory sits vacant. Congress trimmed termination costs but a new contract would be needed if revival occurs. Rockwell notes displaced workers exist and morale is cautious until Senate action.
