Disturbing the Peace Charges For Lompoc Teens

Two Lompoc youths Joseph Hilley age 18 and Michael Hillley age 19 face arraignment in Lompoc Justice Court next Tuesday on three and one counts respectively of disturbing the peace. Investigators say balloons filled with oxygen and acetylene were ignited behind a building at A Street and Chestnut Avenue after a series of loud booms were heard Sunday and Monday night. No damage occurred and deputies arrested the pair Monday night.

Lompoc Cancer Crusade Opens With Breakfast Auction

The annual Lompoc Valley Cancer Crusade starts tomorrow at 8 AM with a no host breakfast at the Lions Inn. Mayor Art Scott will speak and the auction of a colored photo of La Purisima Mission donated by Joe Foldhazy will feature the event. Cancer Crusade chairman George Barnes Jr will preside.

The Lions Inn coffee shop will reopen tomorrow after a one day closure to repair minor damage from a fire in deep fat frying equipment. The incident occurred yesterday with slight damage reported.

Sheriff objects to furor over jail lunches for staff

Sheriff John W. Carpenter told the Board of Supervisors he is amazed by the furor over free jail meals for 87 on duty staff. He said meals, leftovers at about 30 cents each, are fair exchange for half hour briefing time and benefit the county, noting similar practices in Juvenile Hall and county hospitals.

Two-year attempt to save baby Jennifer Kiibs ends

Little Jennifer Kiibs died after a two year effort to keep her alive using tube feeding pioneered at University Hospital in San Diego. She was born with a non rotating small bowel and gangrene. doctors operated early and kept her alive with special formulas until she was taken off feeds. She left hospital briefly before contracting a fatal infection. The Flint family and hospital staff recalled her as a cherished presence during her long care.

San Francisco teachers vote strike as schools open

Public schools opened with minimal classes as the 2700 member Class room Teachers Association began a strike. 800 substitute teachers were called, and a brief negotiating session followed. CTA members crossed AFL CIO picket lines during the walkout amid absences from about one third of districts. Police also busted a burglary ring tied to an Arco service station, arresting three Lompoc men and recovering tires and stereo equipment.
