UCLA Finds Aids Flower Industry

The University of California announces a discovery that could protect California cut flowers from a virulent virus. A tiny built in gene resistant to the virus was found by a florist culturist at the Los Angeles campus. Breeding methods will enable this hereditary unit to be integrated into commercial stock for seed production in the valley.

Youth Wins Award at Cow Palace Junior Livestock Show

DeWayne Holmdahl of Lompoc won a $200 scholarship as outstanding Future Farmer exhibitor of sheep at the Junior Grand National Livestock Show in the Cow Palace this week. He showed a star prime lamb and a choice lamb, placed second in livestock judging and fourth in sheep showmanship. Reed Elms earned a first and second in swine, plus $5 in a greased pig contest. Gary and Arlen Elms won blue ribbons in the 4-H division.

Non-Swim Mer Survivors Find Hope At Municipal Pool

A group recalls being labeled non swimmers during the war and the hardship that followed. They note most non swimmers came from towns lacking swimming facilities and express hope that local efforts now help children learn to swim, ending with a vivid image of buoyant youth at the municipal pool.

Tragic Route 101 Crash Near Dos Pueblos Ranch

At least one person, Mrs. Maxine O Neill of Buellton, is dead after a two vehicle collision Monday night near the Dos Pueblos ranch entrance on Highway 101. Silva escaped unhurt while three others were injured and held on suspicion of felony intoxicated driving. The other drivers are Charles Cox Jr 36 of Lawton Oklahoma and Albert Paul Booth of Paso Robles. Thom as O Neill, widower of the deceased, was listed as out of danger at a Santa Barbara hospital.
