Four Lompoc High School seniors were named winners in the first round of Bank of America’s 1956 Achievement Awards. Bruce Allen won an engraved cup for science and mathematics. Others named were Judy Collier in fine arts George Meyer in liberal arts and John Dutra in vocational arts. The program funds cash awards, cups, and certificates for outstanding scholarship leadership and public service potential.
Voters approved a $650000 building program for Hapgood school and the high school gym. Architect Pierre Claeyssens will direct plans for 12 classrooms and a new gym as engineering and bidding proceed over the next five months. The three bonds plus a 50 cent override tax total over $1 million with interest.
Gertrude Schuyler Harman longtime Lompoc pioneer family member died Monday in Fresno. Born May 27 1871 in Menlo Park she came to Lompoc as a child and married Caleb Ed Harman on August 8 1896 in Lompoc. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1946 and she leaves husband two daughters Mrs. R C Russell of Maricopa and Miss Irene Harman of Fresno. Surviving siblings include Eugene Milton and Lester Schuyler and Mrs S S Maitland and Miss Hazel Schuyler. There are three grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Louis Elvira Lagunas, 69, near the Justice Court, was fined 300 dollars for possession of fighting cocks. Four birds were seized by police, dressed, and given to needy families. 150 dollars of the fine suspended, Lagunas placed on two years probation.
Enrollment for a Basic Electronics course begins tonight at 7 in Room 7 of Lompoc High School with Philip Wahl of Santa Maria as instructor. Classes run Thursdays from 7 to 9 for the next 15 weeks covering DC theory tube basics and circuit applications. Enrollment is $1 and all interested persons may attend.
Pablo E. Garcia, 29, jailed on a disturbing the peace charge after an altercation on West Ocean Avenue. He was to appear in Justice Court after pleading not guilty. The complaining witness Maria Ortiz was found dead of natural causes in a Santa Maria hotel Tuesday afternoon. Authorities expected Garcia would be released due to the lack of a complainant.
The city council on Tuesday approved transferring its lease on the city owned property at Central avenue and 13th street to Intex. Intex first leased the oil rights and later handed them to the Texas Oil company.
Kathleen Buck a 9 year old from Riverside sustained minor injuries Saturday after being hit by a car in Lompoe Manor district. Witnesses signed a complaint against Henry Ray Lee charging excessive speed. The girl received first aid at the scene and was released to her family.
Spring warmth touched Lompoc as temperatures lingered in the 70s. The week peaked at 73 degrees on Thursday and Saturday with an average high of 67 and a low of 39. the coldest reading fell to 35 degrees yesterday morning.
Lompoc district youths lead a three day camporee with about 150 attendees from Santa Maria Orcutt and Buellton. Troop 62 Eagle Beaver and Fox Patrols win Presidential Awards. Troop 63 Cobra Patrol also takes a ribbon. Troops 64 and 66 earn awards.
Representative Charles Teague will speak at a Lompoc Chamber of Commerce dinner meeting at the Lompoc Valley Club to discuss Camp Cooke. The event is part of a district tour and is open to all residents with tickets sold at the Chamber office and the Lompoc Record.
County Water Agency rejected a revised 50 year repayment plan with the Bureau of Reclamation to cover the Cachuma project debt. Officials say rates would rise sharply and an election within districts would likely fail. The Tecolote tunnel cost drives the extra expense even as faster water use could speed repayment.
The city council scheduled the first public hearing on a proposed new zoning ordinance for April 17, one week after the election. A zone map showing proposed changes will be reproduced and publicized for clear presentation. The council also conducted a formal hearing on abandoning part of South M street near the high school.
Lompoc Community Hospital directors approved an across the board rate increase of 2.00 per day effective April 1. Ward rates rise to 12.00, semi private 14.00, private 16.00 and 18.00, pediatrics 12.00. The hospital will still be below the regional average and had operated at a loss under old rates, with taxpayers covering the excess.
Lompoe’s Red Cross drive has raised 788 dollars so far with 778.13 reported last night. Campaign workers will contact every home before the drive ends. Wesley Keyes a Burpee seed organization technician was named president elect of the Lompoc Rotary club He will become president in July succeeding G G Schuknecht Johns Manville assistant plant manager in Lompoc Re elected secretary was G T Gunderson and the board of directors includes John Smalling John Hannah and Emil Scolari.
Juan Ramirez, jailed on a child beating charge, pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Superior Court. The DA moved to dismiss a felony lewd and lascivious conduct charge. Sentencing set for April 2. He remains in county jail on the existing sentence.
Two thefts at Lompoe High were reported to authorities. Archery equipment worth 90 dollars disappeared from the girls dressing room between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning. Earlier the football field concession stand was entered and four cases of soft drinks were stolen.
