Congressman Charles Teague will speak at a Chamber of Commerce dinner in the Valley Club in Lompoc next Thursday evening. He will report on Camp Cooke status and district legislative items during a brief tour of the area, with tickets sold at the Chamber office or the Record.
The Board of Trustees authorized five additional teachers for next fall to place second and third grades in double sessions. Classes will continue double sessions until 12 Hapgood school classrooms are ready, likely through most of 1956-57. The action follows a 50 cent tax override and introduces new retirement fund costs for three percent of salary.
After a Saturday ribbon cutting Mayor Ray Jacobs opened the Lom poc pool drawing hundreds of vacationing children and adults. A Red Cross lifeguard crew led by June Blakeley handled the crowd while donations from Eagles Knights of Columbus and the American Legion funded swims for needy children. Easter Week hours extend the schedule though Fridays remain closed, and several children reported tender blistered toes from the pool floor.
A school board canvass Tuesday night counted three absentee ballots in the bond and tax election. All absentees voted yes on the elementary school bond and tax, with one voting no on the gymnasium. Official results show Yes votes and No votes.
Neal Warren McCannel aged 66 died in Lompoc hospital after a heart attack. A resident of Champloops, Canada, he had just returned from Hawaii with his wife and was traveling by bus through California when he collapsed and was removed to hospital.
Leo Jessie Jones aged 32 and a railroad worker appeared in Justice Court on Monday charged with prowling. He was fined $10.00, suspended, after residents of North N Street filed the complaint leading to his arrest.
Pierre Claeyssens, architect for Lompoc schools, received authorization to proceed with plans for 12 additional Hapgood classrooms and a high school gymnasium. Plans to be drafted for simultaneous bidding after last week's school election, aiming to attract more bidders. A local advisory committee will aid in reviewing progress, mirroring a successful city council project for the municipal swimming pool. Claeyssens specializes in institutional architecture and is currently working on a major UCLA project.
William C. Sudden announced he will not seek another term on the Lompoe school board, ending two terms. The vacancy will be filled in a May election with nominations open until April 18. Carry-over members include Lawrence Huyck Edwin Larsen Mrs Quintin McCabe Kenneth Stillman and Harry Collier.
Prospect notes a dry spell as March nears its end with no rainfall this week, threatening crops in Lompoc valley. Heavy prior rains added 11 to 18 inches in the district but drought now risks beet and mustard yields and range land delays. Santa Ynez river flows drop while water levels stay high from earlier floods. temperatures average 69 by day and 40 by night as clear skies persist.
Four weekend auto crashes in the valley left two people seriously injured. Glen Turner, Alisal ranch employee, suffered critical head injuries when his car rolled on a curve near Streeter ranch on the Lompoc Buellton road and is recovering at Lompon hospital. Eight year old Michael Davis and passenger Thomas Vera were injured in separate Camp Cooke area crashes. Juan Moreno was the driver in the latter incident. Lompoe s Johns Manville plant repeats as first in safety within its division of the Southern California Safety Congress. A delegation led by O B Westmont and G G Schuknecht accepted the award at a dinner in Los Angeles last week. A May 12 ceremony in Lompoc will honor the plant with the Vice President s safety trophy, with National Safety Council and state officials attending.
Nominees for Republican and Democratic Central Committeemen circulated in Lompoc. GOP nominees include Carl B. Kappler, incumbent attorney, and Ellis Elsey, service station operator. Democratic nominees are Carlisle Stadley, supermarket proprietor, and Mrs. A. C. Pedotti, wife of a Las Cruces cattleman. Both Stadley and Mrs. Pedotti are incumbents.
Incumbents Ray Jacobs and Harold Thompson issued a joint campaign statement ahead of the April 10 city council race. They reviewed city issues and their council achievements while opposing four challengers including E. J. Godden Harry Cottrell and Robert Mercer.
The Lompoc Sportsman Association leads a renewed effort to create a three to four mile lake at the mouth of San Antonio canyon with Army approval needed. The project uses a new geological assessment supporting a 20 foot dam at Camp Cooke, aiming for warm water fishing and a potential waterfowl refuge with support from Santa Maria sports groups and a $20 000 state allocation.
Jeffrey Doubleday ten month old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Doubleday died suddenly in San Antonio Texas Tuesday night The infant’s mother is the former Patricia Sudden and the grandparents are Mr and Mrs Robert E Sudden of Lompoc Private funeral services are to be held here tomorrow.
