Beef prices hit record $1.30 a pound in February

A government report shows beef prices rose to a record just over $1.30 per pound in February, up more than 8 cents from January and about 16 percent above three months prior. The Agriculture Department's market basket notes all cuts of choice beef averaged $1.30, vs $1.22 in January and $1.16 a year earlier.

Food price record rises 2.5 percent in February

The Agriculture Department reports the average American family spent 1409 annually on food in February, a record rate driven by beef and pork. Beef hit about 1.30 per pound, up 6.7 percent from January, with a 16 percent gain in three months. Prices overall rose 5.2 percent in the first two months of 1973.

California lawmakers weigh marijuana easing and other measures

In Sacramento this week the Assembly Criminal Justice Commission will hold the first public hearing on AB449 to reduce marijuana possession from a felony to a misdemeanor with up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense. Subsequent offenses carry one year in jail and a $500 fine. The measure echoes a prior proposal by Assemblyman Alan Sieroty that Governor Reagan vetoed last year.
