Sir Noel Coward, British playwright author and actor, died of a heart attack in Jamaica at age 73. Funeral plans were pending as London theaters stage Private Lives and Cowardly Custard to packed houses.
Five men were killed and eleven injured in a weekend of bombings and shootings linked to the Provisional IRA. The bloodiest weekend of the year in Northern Ireland saw a bar and a shop heavily damaged as another man sustained wounds in two separate blasts.
Army Staff Sgt. Bobby G. Sartain is charged with stealing 360000 from the Ft. Polk Louisiana finance office after allegedly feeling like a nobody. He was caught after investigators traced the missing funds.
Navy Commander Charles Everett Southwick, six years a North Vietnamese POW, will be flown to Lompoc April 12 for a welcome by Mayor George Cotsenmoyer. An honor guard from Vandenberg AFB will greet him at the airport and he will address a crowd at the Civic Auditorium followed by a luncheon.
Senate Watergate committee and chief counsel Samuel Dash disclosed fresh information from James W. McCord about others involved in the break in and wiretapping at Democratic headquarters. The Los Angeles Times named John W. Dean III and Jeb Magruder as having prior knowledge, while White House denial came from Press Secretary Ronald Ziegler.
A North Vietnam spokesman said Laotian Communists would free nine US prisoners but have not fixed a time or place. The move blocks final prisoner release and the withdrawal of remaining American troops from South Vietnam amid a Nixon withdrawal freeze and unresolved US-Communist negotiations. No contact has been reported with the Pathet Lao on the Laos releases.
Lompoc's city center faces decline as auto traffic dominates the visual scale. Cal Poly architects urge 16 foot sidewalks, two lane core streets, trees and planters, textured crosswalks, and a pedestrian friendly redesign to encourage lingering and shopping. Nicoloff warns wide streets push drivers through, not pedestrians, and cites a gas station scene as evidence for cleanup in revitalization efforts.
