New Judge Takes Over Angela Davis Murder Case

Judge Alan A. Lindsay of Alameda County was assigned to hear pretrial proceedings in the Angela Davis murder case and her codefendant Ruchell Magee. The pair face murder kidnapping and conspiracy charges for the Aug. 7 Marin County Courthouse shootout that killed four people including a judge.

McColl Says He Will Resign If He Seeks Office Again

Gov. Reagan announced Dr. William McColl of West Covina would resign as a California state colleges trustee if he chooses to run for elective office again. Sen. Richardson had threatened to block McColl’s confirmation, citing plans to campaign against Rep. John Rousselot after McColl’s 1950s Stanford football fame.

Tax relief proposed for private school tuition

Assemblyman Floyd Wakefield introduces two tax deduction bills as alternatives to voucher plans. One allows private school tuition to be deducted from property taxes, the other from state income taxes. Wakefield says the measures offer true revenue sharing and parental choice without mandated integration standards.

County court guards terminated in Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors ended the security contract with Case Detective Agency and notified guards that their services would not be needed after Friday. Judges had previously requested extra protection after threats connected to trials including the Isla Vista Bank of America bombing case.

Legislature Defeats California Wiretap Bills

The California Legislature defeated two bills allowing police electronic eavesdropping for 10 days with a judge's approval. The Senate Judiciary Committee and Assembly Criminal Justice Committee killed the measures despite testimony from James Ritchie of the U S Justice Department Strike Force on Organized Crime for Northern California.
