LAFCO enlarges Santa Barbara influence across South Coast

The Local Agency Formation Commission voted 5-0 to extend its review of Goleta Valley annexation and consider Santa Barbara’s sphere of influence over much of the South Coast from Toro Canyon to Farren Rd. Isla Vista and Hope Ranch may be excluded. The hearing set for March 20 will address Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce petitions for incorporation, Isla Vista, and Hope Ranch. Deadline for action is April 4.

John P. Arevalos 51 died yesterday at Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Wednesday at La Purisima Catholic Church with rosary tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. He was born in 1922 in California and worked 12 years for Beattie Brothers. He is survived by his widow Felicitas, daughter Linda Chaves, son John J. Arevalos, four brothers, four sisters, a grandson, and his mother Amalia Arevalos. Visitation at Starbuck Mortuary through tomorrow 3 p.m.

Alfred Ostini Rosary and Burial Rites for Lompoc Rancher

Alfred Ostini, 59, a retired Lompoc Valley rancher born in 1915 in Blythe, died Friday at Lompoc District Hospital. A rosary was recited last night at McPeek Family Mortuary Chapel and a graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Officiating was Rev. Andrew McGrath of La Purisima Catholic Church. He is survived by two brothers, Joe and Harry Ostini, and two sisters, Mrs. Josie Faletti and Mrs. Hilda Paaske. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Born April 25, 1904 in Mexico, he lived in Lompoc 37 years and is survived by a widow Capalina, three sons John Alex and Joe, daughter Carmen Chavez, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild, brother Jesus Ochoa. Alta-Dena milk warning issued in Lompoc

Health officials warn raw milk from Alta-Dena Dairy sold last week in Lompoc should be returned and not drunk. Ed Everett says current production is pasteurized to eliminate risk, but last week’s raw milk remains suspect as Salmonella Dublin linked to a City of Industry bottling plant prompts a Southern California alert. The dairy delivers to outlets in 50 areas. the Milk Commission ordered pasteurization to halt the threat while investigations continue.

Streakers Seen Across Lompoc Over Weekend

Reports of streakers appeared at multiple Lompoc locations over the weekend with no arrests. Witnesses describe a group including a woman at Thrifty Drug and Discount Store in the Shopping Center, a car door pried with a coat hanger, and two female streakers at Lodge Coffee Shop on North H Street. A separate incident involved five streakers, one a woman, at Lompoc Valley Bowl on Ocean Avenue.
