ABA Draft Opens With Kauffman First Pick In Open Round

Buffalo center Bob Kauffman was the first of an expected 50 players drafted by the ABA in its first open NBA player draft. First round selections included Cazzie Russell, Nate Thurmond, Pete Maravich, Bob Christian, Tom Boerwinkle, Cliff Ray and others as clubs skipped Kareem Abdul Jabbar to target players with expiring or short contracts.
