De Wayne Holmdahl of Lompoc placed in the top ten in California's Outstanding Young Farmer contest held Saturday in Atascadero. Marden Wilbert Jr. of Woodland won. Holmdahl was one of four Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo entrants.

State takes over two county parks and shifts development

The County Park Department transfers Gav iota and Refugio beach parks to the state this month to focus on new county beaches and inland parks in four areas on the South Coast and north county. Three new county park areas Carpinteria Valley Park Kenn neth Adam County Park and Los Alamos County Park are slated to open this summer, with Rincon County Beach Park to be developed by next year after highway realignment. Los Alamos park title is being obtained amid an heir-filled ownership dispute, while oil cleanup crews for Union Oil Co. tackle contaminated Arroyo Burro County Beach Park, though sand may still retain deep oil contamination.

Saigon Rockets Hit Hospital and Grall Hospital

Guerrillas fired three 100 pound rockets into Saigon. One hit a hospital near the U.S. Embassy killing a 3 year old and wounding four adults. A second rocket damaged the Grall Hospital injuring three children. Twenty civilians were killed and more than twenty wounded in the bombardment.

Obituary of J V DeGroot longtime Lompoc resident

Services are pending at McPeek Family Mortuary for J V Jack DeGroot 65 who died today at Lom poc Community Hospital. A Lompoc native since 1941 he worked as a Union Oil distributor and later owned Lundberg Stationery Store with his wife until retirement. He chaired the County Sheriff's Civil Service Commission and is survived by his widow of 434 South E Street.
