Mariner 9 to Run Low on Gas Orbiting Mars
JPL scientists warn Mariner 9 will exhaust its five pound nitrogen supply by early August 1972 while continuing basic orbital observations for 90 days. The issue stems from a circuit design error in the altitude control electronics. The craft launched May 30 from Cape Kennedy and remains about 50 million miles from Earth on its Mars approach.
