California on eve of new fiscal year without budget

Sacramento reports that California nears the new fiscal year with no budget despite six legislators in a two house conference committee. Controller Flournoy warns of a possible shutdown of his office if no budget by midnight, amid concerns over unauthorized spending and taxpayer suits.

Reinecke touts California lead in space shuttle bid

Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke announced progress in securing the space shuttle program for California as he outlined the state task force plan. He credited geography and facilities at Vandenberg and Edwards Air Force Base, noted Senate funding of 100 million dollars, and said NASA would pick launch and recovery sites early next year. Sen Mike Gravel began reading pages from the secret Vietnam Pentagon study at a surprise Senate hearing. Draft Induction Halt Planned If Congress Fails

The White House said the United States will suspend induction of men into the armed forces tonight unless Congress passes a two year extension of the draft law by midnight. Ronald L. Soviet Soyuz 11 tragedy ends in spaceflight deaths

Tass reports the Soyuz 11 mission completed its procedures and reentry but the crew was found dead upon landing. The ashes will be buried at the Kremlin Wall after a state funeral in Red Square, joining other Soviet heroes.
