Vida Blue dominates Royals as 16th win seals shutout

Vida Blue, 21, pitched five hits over seven innings for a 7-0 shutout of the Kansas City Royals to notch his 16th victory. His family from Mansfield, Louisiana watched in Finley’s box as Blue fanned 12 and posted his sixth shutout of the season, lowering his ERA to 1.37. Oakland, 33,888 in attendance, led the AL West by 10 games.

Lompoc Starters Torres Asselstine to Join Hancock Bulldogs

Ernie Torres and Brian Asselstine, both high school standouts from Lompo and Santa Ynez, will join Allan Hancock College Bulldogs baseball next spring. Torres, 9-1 with a 1.33 ERA as a left handed ace, earned Third Team CIF honors, while Asselstine hit .363 for Los Padres runner up. They join 18 other freshmen prospects as Hancock defends the 1971 Central Conference title.
