CHP probes traffic fatality

CHP investigated the death of Mission Hills man Frederick Dawn Benhart 34 who fell from a pickup on McLaughlin Road. Driver James Horst Wallentin 23 left scene to seek help. Funeral services for Benhart scheduled Wednesday. A separate Friday 101 crash near Buellton harmed several, with two deaths and multiple injuries.

Planners Meet Tonight In Lompoc Planning Session

Lompoc Planning Commission meets to discuss disposal of the city county jointly owned 20 acre Highway 1 parcel and pre zoning on a 25 acre area north of the Grefco plant. A public hearing will cover commercial manufacturing zoning on a 24.9 acre tract ahead of possible annexation. The agenda includes Henry Dettamanti off street parking variance at North A Street and East North Avenue, plus annual home occupation permit reviews and next year planning program.

Court overturns conviction of Muhammad Ali in draft case

The Supreme Court unanimously overturns Muhammad Ali's draft evasion conviction, ruling his religious objection to service valid. If upheld, he faced five years in prison, threatening his boxing career. he can resume plans for a July 26 bout in Houston with Jimmy Ellis as his opponent.

Valley cleans up after Flower Festival parade return

Valley recovers from the 1971 Flower Festival with workers sprucing Ryan Park and major streets. John Townsend won a 3750 air sea Hawaii vacation, while Cub Pack 103 took the float sweepstakes and Mission Hills Community Association earned the theme trophy. Astronaut John Young drew cheers as his parade car rolled by. Crowd estimates ranged from 30 000 to 50 000 along H Street and Ocean Avenue, with no major incidents reported. Police and chamber officials noted uncertain profit loss timing and encouraged picking up found items at the police department.

Supreme Court delays ruling on Pentagon papers case amid leaks

Plane crash at Shelter Cove kills 16 of 23 aboard

A twin engine DC3 from Shelter Cove Seapark Ltd. crashed on takeoff near a sewage plant and rock near the California coast. Six are missing and presumed dead while 10 bodies recovered. seven survivors hospitalized. Witnesses describe wreckage strewn along surf and a perilous rescue scene.

Base shelling continues near DMZ as Fuller reoccupied

Communist forces hit five allied bases below the DMZ including Alpha 4 and Charlie 2 with mortar and rocket fire, while Fire Base Fuller was reoccupied by South Vietnamese infantry. US and Saigon spokesmen report several casualties and ongoing bombardments as 496 communists were killed in nine days and 29 allied soldiers dead with 135 wounded. U S B 52s conducted three raids and South Korean units reported 52 enemy killed with one killed and three wounded. A 160 man Vietnamese unit retook Dong Ha mountain to hold briefly.

Mexican authorities probe link between Yuba City killings and Guadalajara slayings

Mexican officials investigate possible connections to the Yuba City migrant farmhand murders after bullfight tickets found at Juan V. Corona's home. Corona, a 37 year old labor contractor charged with 10 slayings, has ties to Autlan Mexico. Authorities consider a second suspect in the Yuba City case.

Glimpses of Lompoc youths hold an impromptu session to tidy Ryan Memorial Park after a Saturday night band concert. Lompoc High School students in John Hargraves environmental class continued the cleanup this morning.

Festival art show winners at Lompoc Flower Festival

The 19th Annual Lompoc Valley Flower Festival judged hundreds of entries from California and other states. Judges were John Babcock George Muro and James Armstrong. cash prizes ranged from 10 to 50 dollars with Roy Ekstrom winning Best of Category in the Opaque Abstract division and other artists like Dorothy Wolters and Roland Herold earning top placements.
