California water projects eyed in 1974 spending plan
The House Appropriations Committee backed a 108 million program for dams canals and other water projects in California as part of a 4.7 billion public works bill for 1974. It recommended 43.9 million for Corps construction 37.5 million for Reclamation and 13 million for small irrigation loans with 13.8 million previously withheld. The package also boosts Central Valley Project funding and planning for future California water plans.

Flower Festival Parade winners and honors list 1973
The 1973 Flower Festival Parade crown went to a Lewis and Clark themed float by Lompoc Elks No. 2274, with Mexican Social Organization winning best theme for a California Missions tribute. COMCEPAC led adult drill, Royal Family topped senior majorettes, Rangerettes led junior majorettes, Cabrillo High School took high school band majorettes, Debutantes won solo majorettes, and multiple units placed across marching, color guard, and youth bands. The 15th U.S. Air Force won military bands, Santa Barbara Elks won drum and bugle corps, with numerous other category winners listed including Antique auto and civic service floats. The parade included a fatal accident on Highway 101 near Nosoqui Creek Bridge, with a driver ejected and hospitalized.

Brave award for rider after horse show injury
Jane Wade, age 9, of Richmansworth, England, fell from a horse at a show and broke her arm. Her arm was cast and she rode again within two hours. Judges gave her a special bravery award despite no horsemanship prizes.

Death of Edward H. Kimmick 88 in Santa Maria
Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Pasco Home in Indiana for Edward H. Kimmick 88 who died Friday in a Santa Maria Hospital. Interment will be in Indiana. He was born in 1885 in Indiana and moved to Lompoc in 1966 to live with son Lowell E. Kimmick at 3308 Rucker Road. Survived by daughter Esther Gillam of Texas eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Local arrangements are by Newhart Family Mortuary of Santa Maria.
